I am excited this year about some changes that will be helpful to the success of our students. Santa Rosa Online, SRO, now has dedicated full-time teachers for just SRO. Students will still schedule their Discussion Based Assessment, DBA, as they have in the past. This will be a major help insuring our students make continual progress. If a students is taking an online class through SRO or FLVS, they have taken on the responsibility of working on that class as if they would in a traditional class and are expected to be on time and in attendance. There are times when a student has not anticipated the time they will be ready for a DBA and will have some down time. That time should be used preparing for their assessment by reviewing their notes. If they have done so and have extra time they are allowed to use class time for other school assignments upon request. This hour has been assigned to the student for the online class and if a student is not using their time wisely they could be asked to be removed from the on-campus setting so the seat could be utilized by another student in need of that computer time.
Cell phones are allowed to be used upon request for communicating with a teacher. Students will still have to notify me that they are accessing their phone for a password, texting their teacher or calling for a DBA. I have received a locker for cell phones to enable students to recharge their phones. Cell chargers are not provided. Students will not be required to keep their phone in the cubby but will need to ensure it is kept in their backpack or purse in the silent mode. It is recognized that this technology is here to stay and encouraged to use these devices responsibly. In the classroom cell phones are not allowed to FaceTime, text their friends/parents, Facebook, Twitter, u-Tube videos or other social networking as per district policy.
